Nurse Intern - Summer Program -
Position to
begin in May or June 2010

– Surgical Unit and/or Progressive Care Unit
Status
Temporary Full Time Status – 72 hours per pay period
Position Description
The
Student Nurse Intern (SNI) works under the direct
supervision of a preceptoring Registered Nurse performing
direct and indirect nursing care for patients. The Student
Nurse Intern collaborates with the preceptoring Registered
Nurse during patient assessment to develop the nursing
diagnosis(s), the patient plan of care and for the
evaluation of nursing interventions.
“Direct
Supervision” is defined as:
“immediate availability to continually coordinate,
direct, and inspect at first hand the practice of another. The
supervising Registered Nurse will be on-site with the Student
Nurse Intern.”
The supervising Registered Nurse may delegate acts within the
scope of professional nursing to the Student Nurse Intern
provided the Registered Nurse does the following:
1.
Delegates tasks commensurate with the educational
preparation and demonstrated abilities of the Student Nurse
Intern;
2.
Provides direction and assistance to the Student Nurse
Intern;
3.
Observes and monitors the activities of the Student Nurse
Intern; and
4.
Evaluates the effectiveness of acts performed by the
Student Nurse Intern.
The
responsibilities of assessment and evaluation must be done in
conjunction with the preceptoring Registered Nurse. The Student
Nurse Intern is responsible to the RN, Charge Nurse, Supervisor,
Nurse Director, and the Vice President of Nursing.

Qualifications
A.
Professional
1.
Currently
enrolled in an ADN or BSN program.
2.
Completion
of at least one year of clinical nursing curriculum.
3.
Knowledge of
computer techniques to support patient care/clinical operations.
4.
Successfully
complete master competency list and unit specific competencies.
B.
Personal
1.
Desire and
ability to cooperate and work with nurse director, supervisors,
and staff.
2.
Exhibits a
sense of responsibility, initiative and honesty.
3.
Have a
compassionate attitude toward the care of the sick.
4.
Have the
maturity and ability to deal effectively with the demands of the
position
Normal Work Schedule
12 hour
shifts – days or evenings
